Sultan of Submission | The Biography - by Rohan | page 4

By the end of his second Intercontinental reign, Bret Hart was looking to negotiate with the WWF's rival wrestling organization, the WCW (World Championship Wrestling). At that time, The Nature Boy, Ric Flair wore the gold in the WWF and was expected to lose the title to the Ultimate Warrior at a non-televised show in Saskatoon, Sascatuan, Canada in October 1992. However, the Warrior was unable to compete that night and so were the other top faces in the organization (such as "Macho Man" Randy Savage). With no one else left to compete against Ric Flair, McMahon asked the Hit Man to substitute for the Ultimate Warrior, in an effort to retain Bret in the WWF. Bret Hart beat Ric Flair with the Sharpshooter and was crowned the new World Wrestling Federation Champion.

Bret Hart was more popular than ever before and was aptly nicknamed The First Superstar of the New Generation. Within the next month, Bret Hart took on and defeated wrestlers like Virgil, Papa Shango, Kamala and Big Boss Man. The 1992 Survivor Series saw a classic WWF World Champion vs WWF Intercontinental Champion match. Bret put the title on the line against the Intercontinental Champion Shawn Michaels (the IC title was not up for grabs). Eventually, the Hit Man put the Heartbreak Kid in the Sharpshooter and got the submission. While Bret celebrated in the ring, Virgil had a stern message to give Bret Hart. Virgil had just been obliterated by a 648 lbs monster called Yokozuna. Yokozuna was unlike any superstar the WWF had ever seen. Yokozuna wanted Bret and the WWF Title.

The Excellence of Execution gladly obliged. At the 1993 Wrestle Mania Bret put the title on the line against Yokozuna. Somehow, Bret managed to get the Sharpshooter on Yoko, but Mr. Fugi threw something into the Hit Man's eye. Temporarily blinded, Bret couldn't fight back and Yokozuna body splashed Bret to win the WWF title. A concerned Hulk Hogan came down to ringside to help his friend Bret Hart. Meanwhile, inside the ring, Fuji and Yokozuna gloated over their new found acquisition. In the heat of the moment, Fugi challenged the Hulkster to get into the ring against Yoko. 128 seconds was all it took for Hulk Hogan to destroy Mr. Fuji and Yokozuna to become the WWF Champion for the fifth time.

His Grace Bret Hart, King of the WWF

Apparently, a misunderstanding caused by Vince McMahon between Bret Hart and Hulk Hogan ruined the chances of what was a great setting for a dream match between the two for the title. Hogan dropped the title to Yokozuna at the 1993 King of The Ring and that made Bret Hart all the more bitter towards Hulk Hogan. At the very first King of the Ring in 1993, Bret Hart took on and defeated the Bad Guy Razor Ramon, Mr. Perfect and Bam Bam Bigelow en route to becoming the world's first King Of The Ring. Bret's coronation ceremony was marred by Jerry "The King" Lawler who took exception to Bret being crowned the King Of The Ring. Lawler attacked Bret Hart from behind with the scepter and beat the Hit Man practically senseless.

Bret was supposed to take on Lawler at the 1993 SummerSlam, Bret "The King" came out with crutches and asked Doink The Clown to substitute for him. As Bret placed the Sharpshooter on Doink, Lawler attacked the Hit Man, and was ordered by WWF president Jack Tunney to fight Bret. Lawler fell to the Sharpshooter, but the decision was reversed when Bret refused to let go of the submission hold.

"I'm not your boytoy!"

At the 1993 Survivor Series, The Hart Brothers (Bret, Owen, Bruce and Keith) took on Shawn Michaels and The Knights (Red Knight, Blue Knight & Black Knight) During the match, Owen, coming off the rope, collided with Bret, who was outside the ring. Shawn Michaels nailed Owen with the Superkick and Owen was eliminated. Eventually the Hart Brothers won the Survivor Match. Owen was upset at being the only member of The Hart Brothers to be eliminated and blamed Bret for his loss. It seemed as though their differences had been sorted out, when Owen and Bret teamed up to take on The Quebeckers for the tag team titles at the 1994 Royal Rumble. Bret placed the Sharpshooter on Pierre, but was unable to complete the hold because of a knee injury. After the referee called for the bell, Owen attacked Bret's injured knee and thus began one of the most memorable rivalries of all time. The very same day, Bret won the 1994 Royal Rumble with Lex Luger when they fell out of the ring at the same time while trying to eliminate each other.

Two Harts

Owen and Bret squared off for the very first time at WrestleMania 10. Owen and Bret had been taught wrestling by their father. Their styles were identical and it was useless trying to beat the other guy, because it was like trying to out-wrestle yourself. Eventually Owen pinned Bret clean right in the middle of the ring. Following this loss at the hands of his younger brother, Bret went into the main-event for the same pay-per-view, a title shot against the man who had beaten him for the title a year ago - Yokozuna. The momentum seemed to be with Yokozuna and Bret was lying motionless on the ground. IOC dragged Bret over to the corner of the ring to deliver the dreaded Bonsai Drop. Unfortunately for the WWF Champion, he lost balance and came crashing to the canvas, Bret moved just in time and pinned Yokozuna to become a 2 time WWF Champion.

Next. Owen and Bret, the saga continues . . .
